Lari MP joseph Mburu at Milimani Law Court this evening

LARI Member of Parliament, Joseph Mburu Kahangara, was charged yesterday with assaulting a traffic police officer and committing five traffic offences.
Mburu was arraigned before Nairobi Magistrate Dolphin Okundi but was ordered remanded at the Central Police Station in Nairobi until Monday to facilitate conclusive investigations.
The politician, who was dressed in casual clothes, denied the charges and was escorted by court orderlies to the basement cells after the proceedings. The prosecution said he unlawfully assaulted Corporal David Ruto at about 10 am on December 6 when the police officer was executing his official duties.
The magistrate ruled that the application by the prosecution to have the MP remanded in police custody over the weekend was not unreasonable to facilitate the conduct of conclusive investigations. The politician had pleaded that he was not a flight risk and would avail himself in case the police wanted to interview him further.
Mburu was accused of obstruction, overtaking, driving a motor vehicle without a licence, overlapping and failure to obey lawful instructions issued by a uniformed traffic police officer. He was driving his personal four-wheel drive vehicle during the altercation with the police along Murang’a Road in Nairobi.
Okundi directed him to post Sh100,000 cash bail to secure his liberty after he denied the traffic charges. But he will appear in court on Monday for further directions regarding the traffic case.
