BY SAM ALFAN.
High court has stopped Nairobi County government from increasing land and property rates from 15 to 34 per cent against Karen and Langata residents.
Justice Mumbi Ngugi said pending the hearing of the petition filed by the residents and the one filed by Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko challenging the county government over the increased rates, there shall be no demand on the new increment.
Justice Mumbi was told by the resident lawyer Nganga Mbugua that, the county government did not consult before announcing the increment.
He said the county government must account and demonstrate how it has utilized the money they have been receiving from the residents.
Mr Mbugua submitted that whereas the applicant have not refused to pay the rates, they must shown how the county has be spending the money
The two matters will mentioned before Justice George Odunga on 12 September for further directions.
