BY SAM ALFAN. A 95 year-old grandmother was on Thursday charged with stealing Sh900, 000 as accrued rent in four years contrary to the law. Esther Nyambura Wachira from Muranga denied the charge before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo and was released on a personal bond of Sh100, 000 with one surety of a similar amount. The Court heard that she allegedly committed the offense on diverse dates between January 2000 and December 2014 in Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo’s estate. The elderly grandmother had spent Wednesday night in cold cells at the Kilimani police station in Nairobi after she was arrested in Murang’a where she lives. Her lawyer Wangalwa Oudo told the court that the aged grandmother spent the night in cells at Kilimani police station yet she was sickly with arthritis, diabetes and hypertension and will now have to be taken to the hospital. The magistrate directed that her children stand in as a surety and ensure that she is availed in court whenever she is needed. The case will be heard on August 25 and mentioned on 30 July for purposes of direction after it emerged that there is another pending criminal case at the High Court in which Ms Wachira is among the disputing parties regarding the same plot. Her son said her mother is being fought by people attempting to steal their land.He said police from Kilimani police station traveled all the way to Muranga to arrest his mother. He further claimed they mishandled her during the arrest despite her age. By the time of this publication she had left the court for medication.
